When a tooth needs a crown
- A large old filling is cracking the surrounding enamel
- A tooth has fractured or chipped significantly
- A tooth has just had root canal therapy and needs structural protection
- A tooth is severely worn from grinding or acid erosion
- A tooth has discolored badly and is not a candidate for veneers
- A patient wants a cosmetic improvement that requires changing tooth shape, not just surface
Same-day crowns with CEREC
For most crown cases, we use our in-office CEREC system to design and mill the final ceramic crown in a single visit — no temporary, no two-week wait, no second appointment. The process: iTero digital scan, on-screen design with Dr. Desai, ceramic block milled in our office, hand-stained and glazed for a natural look, and bonded the same day.
When we still use a dental lab
For front teeth, multi-unit cases, or any case where the aesthetic stakes are highest, we partner with a master ceramist lab whose work is responsible for many of the cosmetic cases on our smile gallery. These cases run two visits across roughly two weeks. The result is worth the wait.
Crown materials, plainly
| Material | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lithium disilicate (e.max) | Front and most back teeth | Strong, highly aesthetic, often CEREC same-day |
| Zirconia (monolithic) | Heavily loaded molars, grinders | Extremely strong; modern translucent zirconia looks excellent |
| Layered zirconia / ceramic | Highly visible front teeth | Lab-fabricated, exceptional aesthetics |
| Porcelain-fused-to-metal | Rarely used today | Older option; we generally prefer modern ceramics |
| Gold | Specific clinical situations | Available; uncommon by patient preference |
Dental bridges
A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by suspending a false tooth (the “pontic”) between two crowned neighboring teeth (the “abutments”). It is fixed in place, looks natural, and chews like the original tooth.
A bridge is the right answer when:
- One or more teeth are missing between two healthy teeth that could carry crowns
- The neighboring teeth already need crowns for other reasons
- Surgery is not a preferred option for the patient
For long-term durability and bite distribution, we’ll talk through whether a bridge or another solution is the right choice for your specific situation.
Bridge timeline
- iTero scan and bite analysis.
- Conservative preparation of the abutment teeth.
- Lab-fabricated ceramic bridge built by our master ceramist.
- Final bridge bonded in the second visit, bite balanced.
Lifespan of crowns and bridges
A well-placed ceramic crown lasts 15–25 years with normal care, often longer. A bridge typically lasts 12–20 years, with the limiting factor usually being the long-term health of the abutment teeth and gums.
About investment & financing
Every crown or bridge case is planned and priced individually. We provide a written treatment plan with line-item fees before any work begins. We’re flexible about pacing — sometimes we’ll suggest doing the most urgent crown now and phasing the rest over the next several visits. CareCredit, Sunbit, in-house monthly arrangements, and HSA/FSA all available. Insurance covers a portion of most crown and bridge cases; our front office will pre-verify benefits before the appointment.
Frequently asked
How long does a CEREC same-day crown take?
About 2–3 hours total in our office — scan, design, mill, glaze, bond. Most patients spend part of the time on a laptop or with a book.
Are CEREC crowns as good as lab crowns?
For most cases, yes. Modern lithium disilicate blocks milled in office and finished by hand match or exceed lab work in fit and durability. For the very highest aesthetic demand on front teeth, we still send work to our master ceramist.
How long do crowns and bridges last at Dublin Ranch Dental?
With normal care, a well-placed ceramic crown lasts 15–25 years and often longer. Bridges typically last 12–20 years.
Will my crown look like my other teeth?
Yes. We match the shade, translucency, and surface texture of your surrounding teeth carefully — the crown should be invisible.
What does a crown cost at Dublin Ranch Dental?
Every case is planned and priced individually. Pricing depends on the tooth, the material, and whether any additional treatment (build-up, root canal) is required. Come in for an exam and you’ll leave with a written, itemized plan and a real conversation about how to make it work.
